The aim of the workshop


The goal of this workshop is to learn more about the act of observation. We can only paint what we are able to see. Núria will not teach traditional watercolor techniques, the focus of this workshop lies in observation rather than technical execution or replicating Núria’s style. Each of us has a unique voice, the workshop’s intention is to plant a seed that allows you to develop your own artistic voice. We will explore core painting principles such as values, color and composition. Participants will complete several life studies.

This workshop is intended for all levels, from beginners to professional artists.

Workshop structure

MORNING (from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm)

Introduction to value studies and practical exercises to master this essential tool. Paint a simple composition from life.

LUNCH BREAK (from 1:00 Pm to 2:30 pm)

Lunch is not included, each participant can bring their own lunch or go to a nearby restaurant.

AFTERNOON (from 2:30 Pm to 5:30 pm)

Introduction to composition. Paint a more complex still life setup from life.

Núria will also provide live demonstrations. However, the aim of this workshop is not to make a “pretty” painting in her style, but to plant a seed that allows you to develop your own artistic voice using the tools provided.

Recommended materials


This is a list of recommended materials, but you can also bring the watercolor materials you normally use.

  • Watercolor paper in A4 ( 210 × 297 mm or 8.3 × 11.7 inches) or A5 standard sizes ( 148 × 210 mm or 5.8 × 8.3 inches).

    Núria will use Arches Hot Pressed, 100% Cotton, 300 g. Feel free to use Cold Pressed or Rough paper if you prefer to use those.

  • Bring your normal paper sketchbook or some sheets of normal paper, we will use this paper to do some pencil studies without watercolors.

  • Masking tape to fix the paper on a board.

  • A wooden or plastic board to fix the paper with the masking tape.

  • Either in tube or godet format. You will only need the 3 primary colors. Look in your palette for the following colors:

    • One blue - for example, you can choose one of these: cadmium blue, blue sennelier, phtalo blue…

    • One red - for example, you can choose one of these: cadmium red, vermillion, permanent red, alizarin crimson…

    • One yellow - for example you can choose one of these: cadmium yellow, yellow deep

  • A palette or a dish to mix the colors.

  • You can bring the brushes you normally use. But Núria will use mostly big flat brushes.

  • Bring a pencil and eraser (kneaded eraser preferably).

While some content may overlap on day two, you will receive individualized feedback and direct access to Núria for all your questions.

The language of the workshops will be Catalan, Spanish and English.

  • You can bring the watercolor materials you normally use. The materials list is not mandatory, the list is just a recommendation.

  • We will use half A4 and A4 paper size. That is, 148 × 210 mm (5.8 × 8.2 inches). And 210 × 297 mm (8.3 × 11.7 inches).

  • Yes! This workshop is intended for all levels, from beginners to professional artists. You will gain useful tools for your own painting process, wherever you are on your learning curve.

  • No, this workshop is inside the studio of Taller Irving, we will focus on still life, but you can apply the same principles for landscape painting.

  • Yes! You can sign up for the 25th and the 26th, or only for the 25th or only for the 26th, it is up to you. Note that while some content may overlap on day two, you will receive individualized feedback and direct access to Núria for all your questions. So if you sign up for both days, you will get a greater chance to practice and ask more questions to her.

  • The content will be taught in Catalan, Spanish and English and your individual feedback on the language you prefer.

  • The demo will be about what the majority decides. Do you want Núria to paint an egg? Feel free to ask.
